Nukkad Natak – A Loud Voice

Break the barriers ….raise ur voice…and reach the people . This is how I will define Nukkad natak . It’s an integral part of Indian tradition. The idea of nukkad natak is to propagate social and political messages in a humorous and sarcastic way and create awareness amongst the masses. Passion, energy, creativity and freedom to perform in the open skies without constraints of a stage , and a powerful medium to raise ur concerns and spread awareness, that is what Nukkad is all about. HISTORY There has been an explosion of Nukkad activity in india in the eighties and nineties. It was driven to Street because theatres would not stage such political plays which were characterised by vivid portrayal of real events, popular language and minimal props. SAFDAR HASHMI, founder of the ‘Jan Natya Manch’ and an ITPA activist, also known as father of street plays , endorsed Nukkad natak to criticize government policies and support social activism. He was murdered by political henchmen while performing his Street play “Halla Bol”. His slaying was given wide coverage in national press and hence leading to social awareness of the masses.   WHY NUKKAD NATAK AT JAIRANGAM? High energy acts coupled with zeal and a will to supersede the plurality of performances is what Jairangam plans to showcase. Jairangam wants to awaken them who slumber in the face of injustice, fear, callousness by means of Nukkad natak, because it’s a powerful tool by which we can make the society a better place to live in. Nukkad natak’s major domain was and continues to be, social awareness…it’s a form of drama that comes with a cause. This is true for the third world countries like India, where political activism is strong and democracy is regarded highly and facing issues From corruption to female foeticide…..from everyone teasing to gang rapes. Jairangam will be showcasing Rang mastaaney’s Abhishek mudgal along with his group who will raise his voice in perhaps the most effective way by combining live action before live audience with an instantaneous responses of applause and tears in the middle of the streets from 13th Nov. To 27th Nov. with 50 nukkad nataks. Don’t forget to stop a while. You will come away entertained and may be just a little wiser.
